Sue Wooster qualified for the matchplay component of the 2021 US Senior Women’s Matchplay. The event consists of 36 holes stroke qualifying to determine the top 64 players from a field of 132 who then go on to the matchplay rounds. The event originally was a 54 holes stroke format until 1997 when the matchplay section was introduced. After rounds of 76, 77 at the par 72 course, Sue finished tied 15th in another fantastic effort on the major world amateur scene, making the matchplay section three times from three attempts. This is a wonderful effort by Sue and she now has her mind set firmly on making the final for the third straight occasion.
Sue Wooster has unfortunately bowed out in the first round of matchplay to Louella Kanew (#50 seed) by a margin of 3&2. Sue took a 1up lead after the fourth hole, but a bogey at the par 5 fifth hole let her opponent get back to square. Sue then won the seventh with a birdie 2 only for Louella to make a birdie on the very next hole to again square the match up. Sue then produced some uncharacteristic play over the next four holes, not recording a par on any of them and her opponent took this opportunity to establish a lead of 3up which she maintained to close out the match.
Whilst not the result Sue was looking for, to make the matchplay section three years running is a magnificent effort, one which we’re all extremely proud of. Sue’s energies now will be focused on the US Women’s Mid Amateur Championship to be played at Berkeley Hall Golf Club in South Carolina from September 25 – 30. We wish Sue all the best for this event and will be watching with great interest.
